Boom In The Animation Industry : Arrival of Roll No 21

New Toons On The Block

2010 has been a great year in terms of animation series in India. Turner International has been rolling out new toons quite regularly through their channels (Pogo and Cartoon Network)

When one talks about Indian Animation they almost always think of mythology. The brilliance of some of the new shows on air currently is the fact that though they may be inspired from mythology, they have very little to do with mythology.

June saw the premiere of Kumbh Karan on Pogo. No this is not the Kumbhkaran of Ramayan. This show is about twin boys called Kumbh and Karan who stay in a cute little village called Ajabgajabpur. The denizens of Ajabgajabpur as well as people from all over the land rely on the awesome duo to solve their problems which range from simple things like the well drying up to the more complex alien invasions. Kumbh Karan are almost always at loggerheads. Karan is a marksman and his trustee crossbow is always with him. Kumbh is a narcoleptic giant of a twin who sleeps at all the odd occasions and can only be woken by being fed something. Helping Kumbh and Karan in their ordeals are Tara-their best friend, Kaddu - Kumbh's pet porcupine, Super Chacha- their constant supplier of wierd gadgets, Sardar- the sarpanch of the village, Dadi- their loving caretaker and Kabira - their martial arts instructor.

Last week saw the premiere of another such show on Cartoon Network called Roll No 21. This show is about Krishna taking the guise of Kris, a student in Mathura Orphanage. The principal of the Orphanage is Kanishk who is actually Krishna's evil uncle Kansa. Kansa has built this orphanage over his nether realm and summons his demons from the nether realm at will to exact revenge from Krishna. Kansa wants to turn the kids of the orphanage into his own zombie army. Krishna/Kris loves his friends and does whatever he can to stop Kansa/Kanishk from hurting them.

As long as Kris is a student in the orphanage, Kansa's plan can never achieve fruition so Kansa and Krishna battle it out every episode. Apart from Kanishk and his demon army, Kris also has to deal with Golu - the class bully who keeps teasing Kris' friends Radha and Sudama. Vasudev is the P.T. instructor and the only teacher on Kris' side. The rest of the teachers are all a part of Kansa's army. Narad is planted as a spy from heaven who keeps the gods informed about Krishna's progress.

Special thanks to Kaushik Chawla, who has written this post and allowed me to share it with everyone. He is a screenwriter based in mumbai. Has worked with Big Pictures as an in-house writer. now he freelance and writes for a couple of animation series for Cartoon Network.
These make for some rib tickling and innovative shows.
