No One Killed Jessica : Another Non Fiction Film In Queue !

Is Making Of Non-Fiction Films On
Real Life Justified .. ?

Real-life incident stories have become another genre of films for the entertainment industry. A recent movie to follow the trend is No One Killed Jessica, based on the real-life murder story of Jessica Lall, a mumbai based model.Jessica was shot dead in a bar in south Delhi on April 29, 1999. The police arrested Manu Sharma alias Siddharth Vashisht, the son of a wealthy Haryana Congress politician Venod Sharma. No One Killed Jessica is a multistarar film, starring Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan, produced by UTV Spotboy and directed by Rajkumar Gupta. I was going through a website, "Real Bolllywood.com", which talks about this soon-to-be-released movie. http://www.realbollywood.com/news/2010/12/rani-mukerji-happy-killed-jessica-a-certificate.html

With the increase in (recent spate of) films based on real-life incidents, Indian cinema is now opening up to a new sphere of audience. It's always interesting to see the most talked about issues in the form of a motion picture. The viewer can relate more to such scripts and tends to recall incidents from history. A fiction film is pleasing, but a non-fiction subject tends to be more appealing to the Indian audience, as an increasing number of films are being made on 'real life'.

A glimpse at a few non-fiction films from recent years:

Black Friday (2004): A film about the investigations following the 1993 serial Bombay bomb blasts;
Chak De India (2007): Based on the real life story of Mir Negi, a former football coach.
Mumbai Meri Jaan (2008): Based on a terrorist attack,11 July 2006, Mumbai was shattered by seven bomb blasts on Western  Railway Stations.
26th July in Barista (2008): A film based on the floods in Mumbai on July 26, 2005
An untitled film by producer/director, Ekta Kapoor (under production): Based on the MMS sex scandal of a school-going girl from DPS
And, of course, No one Killed Jessica which releases in 2011.

Moving towards Hollywood, who can forget the magic and spell created by James Cameron's famous film  Titanic ? I guess the magic still goes on and it captures our mind and soul in the same manner as it used to do when the film was released in the year 1997. Although it is a semi-fictional film, as the love showcasted between the characters of 'Jack' played by Lonardo De Caprio and 'Rose'  played by Kate Winslet was a fiction, shown with a background of a real story of the ill-fated and unsinkable ship- Titanic.

Non-fiction genre is a good idea of film making as it gives the audience a sense of connectivity but it lacks innovation. At times it can even hurt the sentiments of  people on whose life the film is being made. Just in the lust of adding a little more cash to their pockets, one should not be  ruthless and play with the lives and sentiments of others. If such projects are undertaken for a social cause and are fighting against a communal issue only then such films are acceptable and are welcomed with an open heart.
